Tagtäglich sehen und hören wir es auf allen Kanälen: Kunststoffmüll ist längst zu einem ernsten weltweiten Problem für Mensch, Tier und Natur geworden. Auch wenn inzwischen viele Kunststoffe recycelt werden können, geschieht das nur unter hohem Energie- und Sammel-Aufwand. Und selbst dann ist der Anteil der recycelten Menge an Alu oder Kunststoff immer noch gering. Von der Tatsache, dass für die Herstellung von Kunststoff zu einem großen Teil noch immer Erdöl verwendet wird ganz abgesehen.

Allein in Deutschland werden jedes Jahr rund 12 Millionen Tonnen Kunststoff verarbeitet – so viel wie in keinem anderen Land in Europa. Doch fossile Ressourcen sind endlich. Deshalb haben wir es uns zur Aufgabe gemacht, wo immer es möglich ist, auf den Einsatz erdölbasierter Kunststoffe verzichten oder deren Anteil so weit wie möglich zu reduzieren.

The raw material SUN CIRCLE is made from a worldwide unique recipe from the shells of the sunflower seeds, a mineral filler and BioPBSTM.
It is important to mention that the shells of the sunflower seeds are a waste product that arises from the extraction of sunflower seeds. They make up at least around 6 million tons worldwide, which are normally disposed of as waste products.
This means that an essential part of the raw material SUN CIRCLE is not in competition with food.
And – sunflowers always grow back naturally.

BioPBS™ is a starch-based bioplastic based on succinic acid. By using this raw material, we save up to 70% fossil resources compared to the production of conventional, non-bio-based plastics. Our target is to increase this proportion to 100% in the next few years.

Are food used in the production of the BioPBS ™?2020-10-14T11:59:54+00:00

Starch (sugar polymer) from maize plants is used in the manufacture of the BioPBSTM. Since there is a large excess of sugar, it makes sense to use the sugar molecules as raw materials. Also in this case we don’t have any conflicts of interests with the food industry.
The valuable proteins of the plants are not used and can e.g. processed as animal feed.

What does the “OK compost HOME” certification mean?2020-10-14T12:01:28+00:00

A basic distinction is made today between two types of composting: industrial compostability and home compostability.
“OK compost INDUSTRIAL” means that a temperature of over 50 ° C is used to accelerate composting, so that additional energy is used. In addition, the product has to be transported to a central disposal facility, which leads to increased costs and increased CO2 emissions.
“OK compost HOME” means that the raw material decomposes quickly already at significantly lower temperatures, such as those e.g. prevail in the garden soil or in the garden composter. Even in the winter period there is significant degradation. In addition, home composting means short distances, as the HOMEcap does not have to be disposed of with household waste. The nutrients in the coffee grounds are thus retained in the cycle of materials, unlike, for example, when incinerated in a waste incineration plant.

TÜV Zertifikat für echte Heimkompostierbarkeit„OK compost HOME“ bedeutet, dass sich der Rohstoff bereits bei deutlich geringeren Temperaturen, wie sie z.B. in der Gartenerde oder im Gartenkomposter herrschen, schnell zersetzt. Selbst in der Winterperiode findet ein deutlicher Abbau statt. Zusätzlich bedeutet die heimische Kompostierung kurze Wege, da die HOMEcap nicht im Hausmüll entsorgt werden muss. Die Nährstoffe des Kaffeesatzes bleiben somit dem Stoffkreislauf erhalten, anders als beispielsweise bei der Verbrennung in einer Müllverbrennungsanlage.

At the moment there is neither a German nor a European standard that defines the mandatory requirements for home compostability. So far, there is only one for industrial compostability – the EN 13432 or European standard for industrial compostability of packaging. It defines the minimum requirements for how quickly a product must decompose and biodegrade under industrial conditions within a certain time.
Specifically, the packaging product must have 90% biodegraded within 90 days at a temperature of 58 ° C.
Why only 90%? This is easy to explain: the test only measures the CO2 emissions, but not the increase in the mass of bacteria or organic fungi. The latter is 10%, which results in a total of 100 transformation into soil or natural fertilizer.
When testing for the “OK compost HOME” certificate, TÜV Austria examines whether the minimum requirements outlined above can also be achieved under the normal natural conditions of domestic garden compost. The most striking difference is the temperature. Instead of at 58 ° C, i.e. with additional consumption of heat or energy, biodegradation must be possible for home composting at 28 °C, without additional consumption of resources.
Even if the outside temperatures in Central Europe are below 28 °C for several months per year, the test means that the property of home compostability is basically given. At lower temperatures it may take a few weeks longer for the biological degradation process to end.
Conclusion:
TÜV Austria therefore checks whether the result of the biological degradation according to the standard for industrial composting is achieved not only for this, but even for the more difficult home composting. If this is the case, the packaging receives the “OK compost HOME” certificate for home composting.
The fact that this certificate has so far rarely been awarded to beverage packaging speaks for the raw material SUN CIRCLE, which is allowed to carry this rare and therefore coveted award.

Der TÜV-Austria prüft also, ob das Ergebnis des biologischen Abbaus gemäß der Norm zur industriellen Kompostierung nicht nur dafür, sondern sogar für die schwierigere Heimkompostierung erreicht wird. Ist dies der Fall, erhält eine Verpackung das Zertifikat für Heimkompostierung „OK compost HOME“. Dass dieses Zertifikat bis dato äußerst selten an Getränkeverpackungen vergeben werden konnte, spricht für den Rohstoff SUN CIRCLE, der diese rare und daher begehrte Auszeichnung tragen darf.

Conventional plastics are based on fossil raw materials (e.g. crude oil), but their availability is limited. In the foreseeable future, these sources will dry up. What is far more important, however, is the environmental aspect: capsules made of aluminum or conventional plastics need hundreds of years in the earth to be completely decomposed. They contribute – from year to year more – to the littering of entire regions and to the destruction of the necessary habitat for humans and animals on land and in water. In addition, fossil materials release a large amount of climate-damaging CO2.
The SUN CIRCLE raw material therefore consists – on the basis of many years of research – on a reliable raw material mix, the proportion of which is based on natural resources is over 70%. We are also working on increasing the natural proportion even further.
The packaging products made from SUN CIRCLE can already be completely degraded in the ground within 12 months, even under the less favorable conditions of home composting.
